BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Morehead State men's and women's tennis teams fell in the season finale Saturday at OVC rival Samford. The women's team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Bulldogs while the men were shutout by Samford 7-0. Alexandra Rydberg posted the lone MSU win on the day.

In women's action Alexandra Rydberg and Heather Butt posted singles wins. Rydberg posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kimberly Ferris in the No. 3 match. Butt's victory came in the No. 5 match as she downed Eloah Lopes 6-4, 7-6.

In the men's match, Bradley Bryan posted the lone singles win at the No. 4 slot. Bryan defeated Joey Unkenholz 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 in a tough match.

The Eagles will close out the season tomorrow at Samford. The men will also play Alabama-Birmingham tomorrow afternoon.

Against Austin Peay the Eagles took all but one singles match and two out of three doubles matches. Madeleinne Antero posted a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Alix Lakow for a win at No. 3 doubles.

Meg Rozboril defeated Morgan Klieber 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Lauren Delaney posted a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 4 slot, and Heather Butt and Lakow posted wins at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.

The Eagles fell 6-1 at UT-Martin. Morehead State will finish the conference slate in Alabama with a match against Jacksonville State on Friday and Samford on Saturday.

Alexandra Rydberg took EKU's Meredith Giles to three sets before falling 6-7, 6-0, 10-7 in the No. 2 match. In women's doubles, Rydberg and Megan Rozboril posted an 8-3 win in the No. 2 match.

In men's action, the Eagles' fought hard but fell 7-0. Charles Williams took Fred Goncalves to three hard-fought sets before falling 7-5, 3-6, 12-14 in the No. 5 match.

Lovell Medcalf was able to win the second set against Vadzim Ivanis 7-6, but fell in the third set 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

 Morehead State's men will travel to face the University of Kentucky tomorrow before both teams resume conference play at Austin Peay on Saturday.

"The final score is no indication of how close this match was," said MSU coach Kevin Fulton. "We gave Murray State all they could handle, and they are the defending Ohio Valley Conference champs."

Rozboril and freshman Alexandra Rydberg teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

"Rozboril took a huge step in the right direction tonight," said Fulton. "We have been working with her on getting fast starts and staying in the front. It's starting to work."

With the loss MSU falls to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in OVC play. The Eagles will face Eastern Kentucky Tuesday in Richmond.

In doubles action, the Eagles took the No. 3 match when Madeleinne Antero and Lakow posted an 8-6 victory over Abbie Allgire and Carrie Larson.

The Eagles fell to 6-9 overall and an even 2-2 in the conference. Morehead State will host OVC rival Murray State Friday at 2:30.

"The girls had a lot to prove to themselves after yesterday, we all felt we had not played
our best tennis, and we challenged them to come out today and play with fire and
fight and they came out like Muhammad Ali," said MSU coach Kevin Fulton. 

"Heather Butt is now 3-0 in conference and is playing very smart tennis. Butt was the key for us winning the match today. So was Madelenne Antero. She came up and played her best tennis of the spring and is starting to embrace the college game."

The Eagles lost the doubles point but got things going in singles action when Antero earned a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 2 match. Butt earned her third conference win of the season over Alyce Kelly 6-0, 7-6 in No. 4 singles.

Against Tennessee State the Eagles posted a 7-0 victory. Butt earned her fourth conference singles victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Penelope Johnson in the No. 2 slot. Alli Nickell posted her first conference win of 2008 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

Morehead State improves to 2-1 in conference play and will host Eastern Illinois on March 27, at 9 a.m.

In No. 1 singles Alexandra Rydberg played the most physically demanding match of the day when she took Kelly Holtzhausen to three sets before falling in the tie breaker. Holtzhausen defeated Rydberg 4-6, 6-2, 10-2.

In No. 2 singles Mariana Cano held off a determined effort by Madeleinne Antero 6-0, 6-4. Catherine Butts held her own in the first set at No. 6 singles but fell to Ejina Yartseva 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles play Butts and Rydberg fought hard but fell to Dianna Woodcock and Yartseva 8-5.

Morehead State will be in action tomorrow as the Eagles host conference foes Southeast Missouri at 9 a.m. and Tennessee State at 1 p.m.
