- Women's Basketball Ends Season At Murray in OVC Tournament
"We just didn't have an answer for them tonight," said MSU women's coach Mike Bradbury. "They (Murray State) jumped on us good to start the game and we couldn't never recover." Morehead State didn't score until the 17:49 mark of the first half on two free throws by Brandi Rayburn. The Eagles missed their first 10 shots from the field. MSU's first field goal was a 3-pointer by Philnisha Lindsey with 10:58 remaining in the first half. Murray State led 46-26 at the half. In the second half, Morehead State could get no closer than 20. "It wasn't a lack of effort. Our players were giving their all. Murray is just a more athletic team than we were," said Bradbury. "Tarah and Anitha did a great job this season in leading this team," said Bradbury of his two seniors. "They did whatever we asked of them and I really am going to miss them." Morehead State, which finished the season 11-19, was topped by Brittany Pittman with a career high 21 points. Senior Tarah Combs ended up with 14 while Brandi Rayburn chipped in with 12. Alania Lee was Murray State's leading scorer with 24 points.

- Women's Basketball Defeats Austin Peay 43-40 and Secures Sixth Seed in OVC Tournament; Will Face Murray State in 1st Round
This will be Morehead State's third straight appearance in the OVC postseason tournament. Last year, as the third seed, UT Martin upset the Eagles at home. In 2005-2006, MSU defeated APSU in Clarksville in the first round before falling to Tennessee Tech in the semifinals in Nashville, Tenn. MSU is 8-16 all-time in the tournament.
Combs and senior Anitha Smith-Williams were playing their final home games in Johnson Arena. Combs hit five three-pointers to give her 91 for the season and 232 for her career. Smith-Williams scored six points, had four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Both teams found the going tough shooting the ball. The Eagles held the Lady Govs to just 28 percent for the game (16-of-58). The Eagles didn't fare much better at 30 percent, but the Eagles outscored APSU 24-12 behind the arc.
Austin Peay was topped by Kellea Reeves with 11 points as they ended their season 6-23 and 3-17 in the league. April Thomas had 10 rebounds, and Ashley McGee dished out eight assists. McGee will end the regular season as the OVC leader in assists. Austin Peay also outrebounded the Eagles 45-36. Sophomore Brittany Pittman, who leads all OVC players in rebounds per game, pulled down nine for MSU.
Morehead State limited APSU to only 23 percent from the field in the first half and led 22-17. The second half saw MSU take two large leads but also saw APSU erase them each time. A Brandi Rayburn layup lifted the MSU advantage to nine (27-18) with 18:59 left in the game, but a 10-0 Lady Gov scoring run erased that lead and made it a 28-27 Lady Gov advantage with 11:59 left.
The Eagles moved the lead back out to nine (37-28) with a 10-0 run of their own. Smith-Williams' three-pointer at the 8:41 mark completed the run. The Eagles led 41-35 later on with 4:31 remaining, but once again, Austin Peay scratched its way back. An Ashley Herring three-pointer with 3:19 left brought her team to within 41-40, but that's the last field goal the visitors could get to fall. Neither team, actually, scored a field goal in the final 3:19, but two Rayburn free throws with six ticks left sealed the final 43-40 margin of victory.

- Eagle Women Beat TSU and Clinch OVC Tournament Berth
Sophomore center Brittany Pittman, who ranks third in the nation in blocked shots, nearly tied a MSU record and inflated her block totals with 12 rejections tonight. That was just one short of Shelly Johnson's MSU and OVC-record 13. Pittman also nearly completed a rare triple-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. MSU also got double figure scoring games from senior Tarah Combs (15), freshman Chynna Bozeman (14) and sophomore Brandi Rayburn (13). Anitha Smith-Williams also flirted with a triple-double with six points, seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists. Tennessee State was led by a pair of post players. Oby Okafor notched 21 points, and Tiffany Jackson also chipped in 21. Okafor completed a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Jackson nearly accomplished the feat with seven boards. Kendra Appling, who was coming off a 50-point outburst last Saturday, scored 16. Both teams had almost identical stats on the night. MSU shot 40 percent for the game, while TSU hit 38 percent of its shots. However, the Eagles outscored the Lady Tigers 18-6 from three-point range. TSU won the battle of the rebounds, 46-40. The game was tight throughout with each team's largest lead seven. However, there were 13 score changes and 11 ties during the 40-minute battle. Appling hit a running jumper to give TSU a 63-61 lead with one minute left, but Bozeman tied it back up 16 seconds later. The Eagle freshman then gave MSU the lead for good with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left. Appling had a chance to tie the game for the Lady Tigers, but she missed the front end of a two-shot situation with eight ticks left. With 2.5 seconds remaining, Bozeman sealed the win with two more charity tosses. The Eagles close the regular season on Saturday when Austin Peay visits for a 5:15 p.m. game. The OVC tournament first-round will take place on Tuesday (March 4), and the Eagles will be on the road as either the fifth, sixth, seventh or eight seed. Seedings will be determined after all games are complete Saturday.

- Women's Basketball Rallies to Beat EKU at Richmond, 68-65
With the win MSU helped itself in its bid for an Ohio Valley Conference tournament berth. Sitting in ninth place entering the night, the Eagles are now at seven league wins. A Tennessee Tech loss to Murray State this Thursday assures MSU of a spot because the Eagles hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over TTU.
Tonight the Eagles trailed by eight (55-47) with 8:26 left but kept the game within striking distance instead of letting it get out of hand. The Eagles whittled away at the lead and still trailed 65-61 with 2:01 remaining. But, with 1:36 left, senior guard Anitha Smith-Williams, who also had a game-high seven assists, backed up her defender Ashley Cazee inside the three point line on the left side. When Cazee backed up even more, Smith-Williams turned around, stepped back, and calmly drilled a three-pointer to bring MSU back to within 65-64.
The Lady Colonels then missed two straight jumpers on their end of the floor, setting the stage for Flynn's eventual game-winner. She got around her defender and pulled up in the lane, sinking her only basket of the evening to push the Eagles on top 66-65. On the opposite end, MSU's Brittany Pittman blocked her third shot of the night, giving the Eagles a chance for insurance. Freshman Chynna Bozeman ran the shot clock down to the end and sank a jumper in the lane. Cazee missed what what have been a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer.
Rayburn had another fantastic effort before fouling out with 4:09 left. She hit 6-of-13 from the field and also hit two three-pointers. For the second straight game, she also had three offensive boards and nine defensive caroms to tie a career high. Combs, meanwhile, hit five treys on the night and registered 15 points. She needed just three to break Sherita Joplin's season record of 80 and now has 83. Bozeman and Pittman also reached double figures in the scoring column with 12 and 10, respectively. Pittman pulled down nine rebounds.
Crystal Jones led the Lady Colonels with 23 points, including a 10-for-10 night at the free throw line. Cazee put in 12 points.
The Eagles won the battle on the glass, 36-33, and shot 81 percent at the free throw line. Morehead State used six three-pointers in the first half to build as much as a 12-point lead at one point (25-13). EKU, however, chipped away at that lead and actually rallied back to take a 32-30 first half lead with 1:32 left. At the break though, MSU led 35-33.
MSU shot 43 percent for the game and held EKU to just 33 percent, including only 4-of-22 from three-point range.
The Eagles return to Johnson Arena Thursday (Feb. 28) when Tennessee State visits for a 5:15 p.m. tipoff.

- Rayburn's Double-Double Highlights Eagle Win over Tennessee Tech, 67-56
Morehead State shot 54 percent in the first half and built a 42-24 lead at the break. The Eagles had to fend off a determined team from TTU though in the final half as the Golden Eagles forced 19 turnovers and outscored the Eagles 32-25. Tech also had 17 steals, including 10 in the final 20 minutes, but the Golden Eagles couldn't capitalize as MSU limited the visitors to just a 25 percent effort from the field for the game and just a 22 percent showing in the second half.
MSU, meanwhile, built the large halftime lead and then had to withstand the pressure and a 31 percent shooting effort themselves in the final half. Rayburn led the charge in the first half with 11 points. She added four points in the final half and grabbed six rebounds in each stanza. MSU also got double figure scoring days from Anitha Smith-Williams (11) and Chynna Bozeman (10) and a spark off the bench from junior Philnisha Lindsey with nine points - one shy of her career high.
TTU was led by Blair Bowens, who scored 17 points for her eighth straight double figure scoring game. She also pulled down a team high six of the Golden Eagles' 38 boards. Allison Price netted 12 points and four steals. Buy virtue of its numerous steals in the final half, Tech was able to take 64 shots but only hit 16 of them.
MSU, which ranks second nationally in three-pointers made per game, used its three-point shooting weaponry in the first half to build the 18-point lead. The Eagles were 9-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half and ended the game with 11 treys, its 11th game this year with more than 10 trifectas. The Eagles were efficient shooting from outside as well as they hit 52 percent.
The Eagles built a 28-10 lead after a Lindsey layup with 8:37 left in the first half, but TTU went on a 10-4 run to cut the Eagle lead to 32-20 with 3:53 left. But, Canyce Flynn ignited another MSU with with her only trey of the game right after that.
In the final half, The Eagles never trailed by less than 10.
Morehead State travels to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, Feb. 26 for a 7 p.m. game.
