Morehead State University Athletics

Strength & Conditioning

The strength and conditioning program at Morehead State provides student-athletes with the best possible physical and mental training to help them perform at their peak potential.

Under the direction of head coach Kevin Deweese, the individual sport programs focus on physical and mental training and nutrition for that particular sport as well as particular athletes. Deweese and his staff develop programs that will help athletes reach their maximum potential and prevent injuries. Athletes have several options for weight training with the centerpiece of the program being the Phil Simms Weight Training Center. Funded by former Morehead State and NFL star quarterback Phil Simms, the center houses weight machines and free weights and is located adjacent to Jayne Stadium. The center has ample space for several teams to train at the same time. Athletes also utilize the weight center in the Academic-Athletic Center. Free weights, as well as state-of-art machines, are located in the facility.

Stressing the whole body, the strength and conditioning program at Morehead State also helps athletes reach their potential in the fields of agility and speed. Deweese and his staff make sure athletes are ready for game action with speed drills and agility training tailored to each sport. The staff also oversees off-season workouts and nutrition programs to make sure Eagle student-athletes are in-shape when the season begins.

MSU student-athletes have been honored for their work in the weight room. In 2008-09, women’s basketball senior and baseball senior Josh Barnes were named All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes by the National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

Mission Statement
To enhance the mental and physical performance of every athlete through a systematic training approach specific to the needs of the individual athlete and sport.

Program Philosophy
Athletic Development: Strength training is one of the major tools of the overall development used to excel in each individual sport. The athletes have been recruited to play a specific sport, and strength training is utilized as a way to improve athletic ability. The individual skills for each sport are to be taught by the sport coach; however, training should be directed toward improving the athlete’s ability to perform. A stronger athlete is a better athlete, however, strength without mobility is useless, they must be able to move and perform on the field.

Work:
o Work Capacity – the athlete’s ability/volume of purposeful activity in a given amount of time
o Work Intensity – an eagerness and concentration on task at hand
o Work Effort – an attempt to achieve all set objectives and goals
o Work Ethic – moral principles and pride of accomplishments

Team Building: Majority of sports requires the ability to successfully operate as a group to achieve a common goal. When possible, training will be held in a team setting in an attempt to improve these intangibles of success:
o Unity
o Competitiveness
o Camaraderie
o Peer review
o Achieve the same goal, win.

Injury Prevention: An injured athlete is a useless athlete. Injury prevention will be approached by proper training and guidance.
o Needs assessment – injury prone areas specific to individual sport, muscular imbalance, mobility/flexibility, proper nutritional guidance, rest and recovery, and general strengthening.
