Rifle Team Has Great Showing in WIRC Championships

The Ohio State team won both the smallbore and air rifle championships. OSU won the air title with a 1,522 with Morehead State finishing second at 1,524. OSU scored a 2,246 for the smallbore title with Akron finishing second at 2,213 and MSU third with 2,213. Freshman Elizabeth Lyon won the small bore with a total of 583 and was second in the air rifle with 389. Also in the air rifle, Shawn Holley finished third with 387. Lyon made first team WIRC all-conference honors in small bore and air rifle. Kevin Mulligan also made first team in small bore while Shawn Holley was selected for the second team in both categories. Lyon, Holley Earn First-Team All-OVC Rifle Honors
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State freshmen rifle athletes Elizabeth Lyon and Shawn Holley each earned First-Team all-Ohio Valley Conference honors this weekend as Morehead State hosted the 2008 OVC Rifle Championships in Button Rifle Range and Drill Room. Holley landed a spot on the first-team air rifle squad, while Lyon tied for the best overall score in smallbore and was named first-team for that event. Both Lyon and Holley also were named on the air rifle and smallbore all-OVC Newcomer teams. Jacksonville State edged out Murray State by just nine total points to win its fourth straight conference overall championship. The Gamecocks also won the air rifle title on Saturday, while Murray State claimed the smallbore team title on Friday.
The Eagles also got a second-team recognition in smallbore as sophomore Kevin Mulligan made the team.
Murray State's Kevin Witbrodt was the smallbore Athlete of the Year, while UT Martin's Heather Tillson was the air rifle Athlete of the Year. Murray State's Alan Lollar won OVC Coach of the Year.
Lyon fired a 573 in smallbore to tie Witbrodt for top score, but Witbrodt won the tiebreaker.
Other scores for MSU in smallbore included: Mulligan (564), Holley (558), Sara Bullock (557), Nathan Lambert (544), Ed Lemley (521) and Alex Bivin (464). In air rifle, MSU's scores were: Holley (582), Lyon (579), Mulligan (561), Bullock (554), Lemley (546), Lambert (538) and Bivin (456).
MSU will now turn its attention toward the NCAA qualifying sectional next Saturday, Feb. 16 at University of Kentucky. Potential high scores there, coupled with other scores from this season, could send an MSU rifle athlete to the NCAA championships.

- MSU to Host OVC Rifle Championships This Weekend
Jacksonville State will be looking to win its fourth straight title. Murray State won seven straight (1994-2000). Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin will take part in the championship. - Men's Rifle Team Defeats Rose-Hulman, Hangs Tight with OVC Defending Champion Jacksonville State
Against Jacksonville State on Saturday, the visiting Gamecocks shot a combined total of 4586 to claim the top score. The MSU men were a close second with a 4444 score, while the MSU women, competing with just three shooters, fired a 3159 aggregate score.
Individually, JSU's Michael Dickinson won the air rifle and smallbore events. He shot a 588 air total and turned in a 578 smallbore score. MSU's Elizabeth Lyon fired the fourth highest air rifle score with a 580 to lead all MSU shooters. In smallbore, the Eagle freshman from King George, Va., took second place with a 573 total. Men's freshman Shawn Holley came in with a 563 smallbore scorecard to place fourth.
Against RHIT, who both teams had already defeated this season in Terre Haute, Ind., the Eagle men won the overall match with a 4428 score. MSU's women were third with a 3207, and RHIT combined to fire a 4335 total.
MSU had the top three individual scores in air rifle. Lyon shot a 579, followed by Holley's 575, and Kevin Mulligan totaled a 564. The Eagles took the top four spots in smallbore as Lyon won with a 560. Holley had a 557, Mulligan scored a 549, and Nathan Lambert shot a 547.
Both teams will be in action at home this weekend as MSU hosts the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Action gets underway at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

- Akron Gets Past Eagle Rifle
Akron finished with a combined score of 4,507 while the Eagle men's squad had a score of 4,464 and the women's team, shooting with only three members, totaled 2,409. Against Akron, the combined MSU rifle squad smallbore scores were: Kevin Mulligan 557; Shawn Holley 557; Nathan Lambert 564; and Ed Lemley 523. In air rifle scores were: Holley 572; Lemley 567' Lambert 563; and Mulligan 561. For the women, the women's smallbore scores were: Elizabeth Lyon 561; Sara Bullock 549; and Alex Bivin 466. The air rifle scores were: Lyon 575, Bullock 553, Bivin 464. MSU will host Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State on Saturday (Feb. 2) and entertain Rose Hulman on Sunday (Feb. 3). Morehead State will host the OVC championships on Feb. 9 and 10.

- Heitmeyer Signs with Morehead State Rifle
The daughter of Steven and Lisa Heitmeyer, she will enroll at MSU and join the rifle team for the 2008-2009 season. She is a former teammate of MSU fresheman Elizabeth Lyon at King George High School.
Heitmeyer is a distinguished sporter air rifle shooter and expert in international air and 3-P .22. A member of the 2007 JROTC rifle competition national championship squad, she also was a part of the Navy JROTC 3x10 national champions and eastern regional champions in 2005 and 2007.
Heitmeyer is a member of her high school's honor roll, Virginia Girls State and the Leadership Academy. She has received certificates from the National Society of High School Scholars and Military Order of World Wars and was the receiptant of the Madeline Thorton Good Citizenship Award.

- Lyon Selected Ohio Valley Conference Air Rifle Athlete of the Month
Lyon averaged a score of 581.2 in four matches while earning two-1st and two-2nd place finishes. Besides improving her score in every match, she finished the month in spectacular fashion by shooting a school record 594 and placing first against Tennessee Tech. Last May, she captured the National Individual Championship and her King George team won the JROTC rifle competition national championship at Fort Benning, Ga. In MSU's last match against TTU, the men finished with a team score of 4,438 (2,225 air, 2213 smallbore) while the women's had a score of 4,222 (2,143 air and 2,079 smallbore). Lyon led the women in both categories as she finished with a 594 in air and 572 in smallbore. For the men, Shawn Holly (Winchester, Va., freshman) finished with a 568 in the air while Holly and Kevin Mulligan (Clark, N.J., sophomore) each finished with 563 in the smallbore. Morehead State will host the University of Akron on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Button Rifle Range.
