Garrett Plooy Joins MSU Rifle Program
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Garrett Plooy, a native of Medford, Wis., has signed a national letter of intent to join the Morehead State rifle program for the 2009-10 season. Head coach Walt Rybka announced Plooy's addition this week. More... |
An honor student interested in construction management, Plooy went to Northland Lutheran High School and also Medford High School.
Plooy placed first or second at six events in his junior shooting career and averaged 512 in three-position for his career and averaged 530 during his senior year. He shot for the MRC Junior Team.
He also lettered in baseball and soccer in high school.

Elizabeth Lyon Finishes Eighth at the NCAA Rifle Championships

Lyon fired a 579 in her relay and advanced to the final round. She finished with a 671.2 aggregate score and 92.2 points in the finals, good enough for eighth place among the more than 40 competitors.

- Rifle Team Takes Home Swanson Tropy from WIRC Championships; Lyon Qualifies for NCAA Championships
At the WIRC event, the Eagles shot a 2230 score in smalbore to finish only nine points behind leader Akron. In air rifle, the Eagles fired a 1508 to tie with Ohio State in thew second spot. Lyon was named First-Team All-Conference in both events and was the top shooter in the kneeling portion of the smallbore competition with a 190.
Sophomore Shawn Holley also earned a First-Team all-league honor in smallbore and was named Second-Team All-WIRC in air rifle. Junior Kevin Mulligan took home a Second-Team All-Conference award in smallbore. His 656 air rifle total placed second among the hundreds of shooters at the event. Lyon's 385 air rifle score placed her third among the conference's elite shooters.
The Swanson Trophy has been awarded since 1939, and its the first time for MSU to take home the hardware.
Lyon will be one of among 48 total competitors at this year's NCAA Rifle Championships, to be held March 13-14 at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the campus of Texas Christian University. Smallbore three-position relays will be held on March 13 and air rifle on March 14. Eight teams qualified to compete in both events, and Lyon will be one of four other individuals shooting for an NCAA title.
She will be the first MSU rifle student-athlete in the history of the program to compete at the NCAA championship.

- MSU Finishes Third At OVC Championships
Jacksonville State captured the title after sweeping both the air rifle and smallbore competitions. MSU posted a team total of 2,256 in the air rifle finals. The Eagles were led by Sara Bullock with an aggregate score of 568. Elizabeth Lyon was second on the team with a score of 566, and Shawn Holley was third for the Eagles with a score of 565. - MSU Rifle Looks To Capture OVC Title
MSU has been led this season by sophomores Elizabeth Lyon and Shawn Holley. Along with MSU and Jacksonville state, teams from Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, and Murray State will vie for the championship.

- Eagle Rifle Finishes Third At Jacksonville State
Elizabeth Lyon led the Eagles in smallbore with a score of 571. Shawn Holley led the way for MSU in the air rifle competition with a score of 573. The Eagles will participate in the OVC Championships at Tennessee Tech on February 7.
