- MSU Women's Basketball Receives NCAA Public Recognition For Academic Progress
"We're extremely proud of the academic success of our women's basketball program," said MSU Athletic Director Brian Hutchinson. "They are true student-athletes. We are committed to this type of progress with all of our sports. We know there is still work to do, and we must continue to educate all of our student-athletes about the value of academic success as well as success on the courts and on the fields." The honored teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The teams recognized this year represent 11.4 percent of the 6,272 Division I teams. The list includes 401 women's teams and 311 men's or mixed squads. A total of 192 Division I institutions had at least one team on the top APR list. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000 over the data collection period. Three Ohio Valley Conference schools received awards, MSU, Eastern Kentucky and Samford. "Congratulations to these teams and their student-athletes for success in the classroom," NCAA President Myles Brand said. "They are setting a great example for their peers and future student-athletes, as well." The effort is part of a public-recognition program the Division I Board of Directors approved in January 2006. Last year, a total of 839 teams were recognized.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000. Multi-year APR scores for all 6,110 Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced May 6. The announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.

- Morehead State University Celebrates National STUDENT-Athlete Day
More than 350 students participate in the intercollegiate athletics program at MSU. On campus April 8 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. EDT, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be handing out Gatorade and schedule posters to all student athletes who come by the SAAC booth under the bell tower. Also that day, all MSU and Rowan County Student Athletes are invited to attend the 3 p.m. MSU baseball game vs. Marshall. Admission will be free and free hot dogs will be given to all in attendance. National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement. The day, established by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society, is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
President Bush has saluted those involved in National STUDENT-Athlete Day activities. In an open letter acknowledging the day, he wrote, "A healthy balance between sports and academics is essential to ensuring that our students are prepared for the challenges of the future."
Richard Lapchick, Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society, said "Over the last fifteen years, National STUDENT-Athlete Day has grown to enormous proportions with over 315,000 student-athletes being honored nationwide last year alone."
"We are honored to participate in National Student Athlete Day at Morehead State University. Student athletes from all age groups put in countless hours and a high level of effort to their sport, and we salute them!" said Melissa Dunn, Assistant Director of Athletics at Morehead State University. "We hope to see everyone at the game on Tuesday."

- Eagle Women and Men in Action Saturday Afternoon
The Eagles will be looking to halt a seven-game losing streak as injuries and other issues have left MSU a little undermanned heading into the final two weeks of the season. The Eagles have just eight players in uniform but still have managed to battle tough. Ten of the Eagles' games this year have been decided by 10 points or less, including a 51-49 win over Tennessee Tech in Cookeville on Jan. 7.
Freshman Chynna Bozeman is this week's OVC Freshman of the Week. She is coming off a 22-point effort at Jacksonville State last Saturday and leads MSU with 12.9 points per game this year. Senior Tarah Combs needs just five three-pointers to break the MSU single season record of 80 treys.
Tennessee Tech enters Saturday's game with an 8-20 overall mark and a 7-11 league record. The Golden Eagles are in eighth place right now just ahead of MSU so the Eagles are in a must-win situation. If Tech would happen the beat MSU, then the Eagles would need to win all three of their remaining OVC games to qualify for the eight-team postseason clash.
The Eagle men are 14-12 overall while James Madison is 11-15. MSU has won 10 of its last 13 games. JMU has lost 10 of its last 11 contests. James Madison Head Coach Dean Keener announced his resignation effective at the end of the 2007-08 season on Friday in Harrisonburg.
Coach Donnie Tyndall's team will close out the regular season with home games against Tennessee State on Thursday (Feb. 28) and Austin Peay next Saturday (March 1). Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST and are a part of Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders.
MSU's women will travel to Eastern Kentucky next Tuesday (Feb. 26) for a 7 p.m. game and then finish the year at home against Tennessee State (Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m.) and Austin Peay (Mar. 1, 5:30 p.m.).

- MSU to Reduce Number of Sponsored Intercollegiate Sports
Women's golf, already led by Head Coach Stephanie Barker, will field its first competitive team since 1984. The men's and women's rifle programs will be consolidated into a mixed team and the institution will no longer sponsor men's and women's indoor track and field. Outdoor track and field will remain. It is the first realignment of intercollegiate sports at MSU since women's soccer was added in 1998. Hutchinson also announced that MSU will add NCAA women's bowling and equestrian programs within the next 4-6 years. "This realignment is the culmination of a well-considered, thoughtful process that began nearly two years ago," Hutchinson stated. "We were aided by Alden & Associates, a consulting firm which studied our Title IX compliance measures."
He continued: "Ultimately, we have to consider how many sports we can sponsor with adequate financial resources, how we manage them within the context of Title IX compliance, and how can we offer the best experience possible for our student-athletes. We feel these steps lead us in that direction." Hutchinson added that the plan was endorsed by MSU's Intercollegiate Athletics Committee and approved by President Wayne D. Andrews. "This new direction for our athletics program comes at an opportune time when we are engaged in a careful review of all aspects of the institutional budget," said President Andrews. "Refocusing resources for improved efficiency and effectiveness in any program is a positive step. In athletics, as well as academics, we want to be the best we can afford to be." Additional information is available by calling Hutchinson at (606) 783-2089.
