KENNESAW, Ga. - Morehead State softball (1-1) split the first two games of the season on Friday afternoon as they erupted for 15 runs in a 15-2 win versus South Carolina State after falling to Saint Louis, 1-0.
In the second game against South Carolina State, the Eagles got RBI doubles from junior
Robyn Leighton and senior
Karly Thompson in the first inning to build a 3-0 lead.
Morehead State followed with seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by Leighton's grand slam, as they cruised to 15-2 victory.
"We came out with the focus we needed offensively and provided plenty of run support for Allison (Rager)," said head coach
David Williams.
Leighton finished the game a single short of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with seven runs batted in.
Sophomore
Aubrey Bennett also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Thompson went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Junior
Kylie Holton went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.
Sophomore
Allison Rager picked up her first win of the season, allowing two hits and unearned runs, while striking out four.Â
The Eagles finished with 15 run off of 11 hits.
In the first game, junior
Chelsea McManaway struck out nine, allowing five hits and just one earned run, but the Eagles managed just one hit as they fell 1-0.
"We had a solid pitching performance from Chelsea (McManaway) and solid defense to back her up. We just didn't push any runs across and left too many people on base," said Williams.
The Eagles continue play in Kennesaw, Ga. tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 p.m. ET when they face host Kennesaw State.
