Robyn Leighton and Junior
Kayla McGuffey combined for seven hits as the Morehead State softball team held on to defeat Bradley, 11-10.
With the win, the Eagles move their record to 4-1 overall.
"Our offense led us to victory on the strength of five doubles and a home run," said head coach
David Williams. "We will carry this momentum into tomorrow and hopefully continue to produce on offense, while eliminating some of the other team's scoring opportunities."
With the score tied at 1-1 after the first inning, the Eagles scored six runs in the second, assisted by a fielding error. Following the error, senior
Dana Hutchins singled in two runs and then Leighton hit her fourth home run of the season, scoring two more.
Bradley pulled within 7-4 after scoring three runs in the third, but the Eagles added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to extend the lead back to 11-4.
Still, the Braves would not go away. After scoring two runs in the sixth, BU threatened again in the seventh. With the Eagles up 11-7 with two outs and the bases loaded, Bradley's Kendall Duffy delivered a double to left field, clearing the bases and trimming the lead to 11-10. With the tying run on third, freshman
Taylor Funk induced a groundout to second base, securing the Eagles' victory.
Leighton continued her hot start at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, four runs batted in, two runs and a walk. She is now batting .615 on the year with three doubles and four home runs.
McGuffey finished 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Hutchins, junior
Karly Thompson, and sophomore
Hannah Murphy had two hits each.
