2016 SCHEDULE (HTML | PDF)
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Coming off the program's best season in nine years, the Morehead State football team will look for continued success in 2016 when the Eagles host six contests and travel for five.
Â
The Eagles will entertain four Pioneer Football League foes (Valparaiso, Marist, Jacksonville and Campbell) and also host non-conference opponents Virginia Military Institute (Sept. 10) and Lincoln (Pa.) (Sept. 17).
Â
"I look forward to hosting six games at Jayne Stadium this year," said fourth-year Head Coach
Rob Tenyer. "Our fan support was outstanding last season, and we anticipate even more excitement this season."
Â
MSU averaged 8,204 fans during the five home games in 2015, which led the PFL by more than 4,000 and ranked among the top 50 in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Â
Game times, ticket information and promotions will be announced at a later date on MSUEagles.com.
Â
The Eagles open the campaign on Sept. 3 at James Madison, the same place they opened the 2015 ledger. JMU finished 11
th in the final STATS FCS poll and defeated FBS opponent Southern Methodist on the road last year.
Â
The James Madison game to start the season will be a good measuring stick for us. They are coming off a terrific season, but will have a new staff and most likely a new scheme. They are an FCS team that is consistently in the Top 25."The James Madison game to start the season will be a good measuring stick for us," said Tenyer. "They are coming off a terrific season, but will have a new staff and most likely a new scheme. They are an FCS team that is consistently in the top 25."
Â
The games against FCS full-scholarship team VMI and Division II Lincoln follow, with Sept. 17 being Family Weekend. Additional home games include Valpo (Oct. 1), Marist (Oct. 15), Jacksonville (Oct. 22) and Campbell (Nov. 12). The Marist game will be Homecoming.
Â
Road contests include Drake (Sept. 24), Dayton (Oct. 8), Butler (Nov. 5) and Davidson (Nov. 19). The opening round of the FCS playoffs are set for Nov. 26.
Â
"I really like how our schedule is set," Tenyer added. "There are no back-to-back away games, we host two non-conference games and only have one flight game (Drake)."
Â
The Eagles wrapped up the 2015 season with a 7-4 overall record and a 6-2 league scorecard, the program's best marks since 2007. Seventeen players were named All-PFL, and eight of those are slated to return for 2016, including PFL Offensive Player of the Year quarterback
Austin Gahafer.
Â
Other all-conference returnees include linebacker
Ryan Bennett, defensive lineman
Colt Briggs, punter
Pat DiSalvio, offensive linemen
Liam Maloney and
C.J. Phillips, slot receiver
Jake Raymond.
