All Morehead State Teams Exceed APR Standards

NCAA RELEASE

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- All 16 Morehead State athletic teams have reached the National Collegiate Athletic Association's multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) threshold of 930.  The NCAA's latest study covers the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.

The Morehead State volleyball program once again recorded a 1,000 during all four years in the cohort, while volleyball, men's basketball and men's tennis also turned in perfect scores during the report's most recent school year.

"Congratulations to all of our student-athletes, especially those associated with the perfect scores," Assistant AD for Student-Athlete Services & Senior Woman Administrator Sara Larson said.  "I enjoy working at Morehead State because our coaches are committed to recruiting quality student-athletes who will succeed in both the classroom and their playing venues."

The NCAA's multi-year APR is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort.  The APR provides a real-time look at and full assessment of each team's academic performance by tracking the progress of every student-athlete on scholarship each semester.  It takes into account eligibility, retention and graduation.

In addition to the perfect multi-year score from volleyball, women's track & field (994), women's golf (993), soccer (988), softball (984), men's tennis (984) and men's golf (983) scored better than a 980 during the four-year period.  Three sports tallied a 1,000 for eligibility/graduation in 2013-14, while two programs earned a maximum score for retention.

Morehead State was selected by the NCAA in 2012 as one of six institutions to be part of a program aimed at increasing student-athlete academic performance.  The NCAA has awarded MSU $300,000 through the Accelerating Academic Success Program grant for the 2015-16 school year.  The Eagles have now reached the program's fully-funded status.

As part of the grant, Morehead State Athletics added a full-time academic learning coordinator to its staff.  The academics staff now includes four staff members plus graduate and student assistants.  The money has also helped maintain the EAGLE Center, which features 7,000 square feet of computer labs, learning labs, study space and offices.

"We are very grateful to the NCAA and our university leadership for their generosity and commitment to our student-athletes," Larson said.  "The academic results continue to get better each school year.  We have always been proud of what our student-athletes accomplish in the classroom, but this additional funding has helped take our success to new level."
