Men’s Hoops vs. Asbury – Post-Game Quotes

Recap | Box Score

Head Coach Sean Woods

"I was pleased to see a lot of good things tonight, but I need to watch tape tonight. We have a lot to work on, and we have to continue to get better, because with seven new guys, we're just not there yet."

On starting five veterans…
"They're the veterans and I wanted to give the new guys a look at the way we play, plus I didn't want to put pressure on the new guys starting out. I thought our starters, our returners, really set the tone tonight."

On Brent Arrington and Corban Collins...
"I thought Corban played with a great pace and I thought Brent was fantastic. We're going to go as far as they take us, that's where our leadership starts and ends. Everybody else just needs to follow suit. As long as those two guys are consistent, I like our chances against anyone."

On the newcomers…
"Lamontray Harris, the freshman from Louisville, Ky. is going to be a dandy. He's so efficient and he just finds ways to put the ball in the hole. I thought DeJuan Marrero was kind of rushing things a little bit, he's got to be able to settle down and find his niche. Xavier Moon came in and was solid. Ronnye Beamon, who has been struggling in preseason, is finally starting to find his way a little bit. I am really proud of our freshman Malik Maitland, he's been struggling a little bit, trying to pick everything up, and I've been putting a lot of pressure on him as of late. But, he's starting to settle down a little bit and as you can see, he's quick on quick and a dynamic basketball player. Once he understands what we're trying to do, he has a chance to be pretty special."

Junior guard Corban Collins

"They came out and played a hard game. They gave us a good test for our first game, in front of our home crowd. I feel like we played with great intensity, with great fire. We were out there flying around and shots were falling for us. Overall, I thought we played pretty well."

On the 30-second shot clock…
"Now, we just have to get into our sets a lot quicker. There's not a lot of time to just stand around and set up. We can't just walk to our spots, we have to sprint to our spots. Our coaching staff has done a really good job of putting us in late clock sets so we know what we are doing when we get towards the end of the shot clock."

On the energy they showed…
"That is definitely something that coach preached before the game, he wanted us to come out and play hard, play with intensity, and everything else will just fall into place. The new guys may come out with jitters, but we knew as long as we just played hard, things will happen for us."

On what they'll work on prior to opener on Nov. 13 vs. Cincinnati Christian…
"Trying to perfect some things, we gave up a lot of middle drives and there were some other things on defense. We have to work on not fouling, and not giving teams easy points at the free throw line. We just need to stick to details."

Senior guard Brent Arrington

"I think it was a good performance. Everyone got into the game, everyone contributed. Some of the newer guys came out and played better than expected, which is definitely a plus. Our offense was pretty fluid for our first game. We had some turnovers, but other than that, it was a good game team-wise. Everybody had each other's back out there, we had good team defense, we were switching on everything and everyone was communicating well. The best part was that everyone came out ready to play and there wasn't too much jitters."

On his performance…
"I'm just trying to stay as consistent as possible. I'm feeding off of the other veteran guys. Right now I'm just trying to let the game come to me and I'm trying to be smarter this year."

On his leadership role…
"I've been trying to take on a leadership role since I've gotten here and with this being my senior year, we can't lose this year. I've played in a championship for my conference before I came here and that's the way I want to go out. I know how it feels, I preach to the guys about how it feels, I wear my ring every day, and I just want everyone to be able to get that same taste at the end of this season."

On what he likes about this team…
"The confidence this team has, everybody has that swagger to them this year. Before we had confidence, but it was different. On this team, everyone knows they're good, but they also know that they can make everyone else better because they are good. The sharing part of this team makes us really good because somebody might go off one night and then somebody else might go off the next. This team is really prepared to give the ball up and make plays for each other and help each other out on defense."
