AUBURN, Ala. -- Senior shortstop Samantha Howard collected a pair of home runs and five RBI as the Morehead State softball team split a doubleheader in the Plainsman Invitational on Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Auburn (2-0-1) took game one, 12-0 in five innings, before Morehead State (1-3) bounced back with a 9-8 comeback win, using back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh, by senior second baseman Stephanie Etter and Howard versus Louisiana-Monroe in the nightcap. Â
Freshman center fielder Kayla McGuffey had the lone hit with two outs in the bottom of the fifth in the loss versus Auburn. The Tigers managed 11 hits off three MSU pitchers. Senior right-hander Kelcey McMurray (0-1) took the loss.
In the victory over ULM, sophomore first baseman Dana Hutchins finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Freshman designated player Karly Thompson also finished with a pair of hits in four at-bats. Howard went 3-for-4 with five RBI.
Freshman right-hander Megan Tymorek (1-1) earned her first collegiate win in relief of junior right-hander Tanna Seuferer. Tymorek worked 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, MSU jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the first on Howard's first homer of the game, a three-run shot and capitalized on a Warhawk error.
Down 6-4 in the top of the fourth, a two-run triple by Hutchins and infield single by Howard gave MSU a 7-6 lead.
Hollie Letourneau gave ULM an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth with her second home run of the contest.
Tymorek retired the heart of the order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory.
MSU returns to action on Sunday versus Notre Dame. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. ET.
