COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior closer Matt Duncan fanned two en route to his record-setting 11
th save of the season as he led Morehead State baseball past Tennessee Tech 3-2 Friday at Bush Stadium.
"Our hats are off to Duncan for breaking a record that has stood for 17 years," said Head Coach Jay Sorg. "I can't emphasize enough how important he has been to our club."
Duncan’s save broke the single-season record held by Michael Thompson since 1995.
Freshman
Aaron Goe (5-4) started the contest for the Eagles (25-19, 10-9 OVC) and earned the win. He tossed eight innings, allowed seven hits and fanned seven.
"Goe was impressive," said Sorg. "Throwing 70 percent strikes is getting it done. I really liked his toughness in the eighth inning when he was able to get through the heart of their order."
MSU scored the first three runs of the contest via the long ball. Senior right fielder
Luke Bainer yanked a first pitch fastball over the left field wall in the first inning off Tech starter Tristan Archer. Archer allowed a two-run blast to senior third baseman Andrew Deeds in the third to extend the Eagle lead to 3-0. Deeds finished the game with two hits, a single and a home run.
The Golden Eagles (17-27, 7-12 OVC) rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth. TTU posted four singles, and second baseman
Dylan Bosheers recorded his second hit - an RBI single down the right field line - to score the second run.
Archer took the loss, his fourth of the season, for TTU. He pitched 7.1 innings, struck out six and allowed three runs.
Morehead State returns to Bush Stadium for game two versus the Golden Eagles Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
