MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Sean Woods was formally introduced as the 13th head men's basketball coach in Morehead State University history on Monday. A crowd of hundreds welcomed Woods at the Adron Doran University Center.
Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson gave the search process background, introduced Woods and then the new coach spoke to the crowd before fielding a variety of questions from over 20 media members on site.
"It's an honor to come back home and do something I love," Woods said. "You're not going to meet a guy more personable, energetic or passionate (about what he does) than me. We're going to be a high-octane team. We're going to play fast, be entertaining and you're going to love the student-athletes we bring to Morehead State."
Woods takes over the Eagle program with high praise from fellow collegiate coaches and friends.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT SEAN WOODS
"Sean is a dynamic personality who did one of the best jobs in college basketball in building Mississippi Valley State into an NCAA Tournament-level program. He had limited resources with basically no budget, no facilities and very little to work with, yet did a phenomenal job in doing it the right way. We're really proud of Sean and welcome him back to the state with open arms."
- Rick Pitino, Head Coach, University of Louisville
"Sean has an engaging and fun personality and is going to be an excellent recruiter and coach for Morehead State. His teams will compete at a high level and play hard, just like he did. When people talk about him, much of it is regarding Sean making 'the shot before the shot' and that shows you what kind of player he was at Kentucky. He was someone who wanted the ball at clutch times and could deliver. His players will learn a lot, and I look forward to watching both Morehead State and Sean flourish in the future. He did an unbelievable job at Mississippi Valley State and will do the same in a basketball-crazy state that will support him."
- Herb Sendek, Head Coach, Arizona State University
"What a great hire by (Athletic Director) Brian Hutchinson. The combination of one of the best young coaches in the college game and a university with a proud history will help continue its path to an 'unforgettable' future. Sean will bring an exciting style of play, as well as a good understanding of players and that community. As the son of two Morehead State graduates and close friend of its new head coach, I say good luck Eagles."
- John Pelphrey, Assistant Coach, University of Florida
"Our family and Sean's family have been close friends for over 16 years. I am very pleased and excited that Coach Woods has been chosen as the next head men's basketball coach at my alma mater. Sean has established himself as an outstanding Division I head coach. I am confident he will continue and build on the success of Eagle basketball that has been established over the past six years under Coach (Donnie) Tyndall."
