EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Morehead State baseball capitalized on eight walks by SIU Edwardsville pitchers in Saturday’s 12-4 rubber-match victory at Roy E. Lee Field. The series win is MSU's second in conference play this season.
Cougar starter Thad Hawkins issued six free passes and was responsible for four earned runs. He lasted three innings and took the loss.
MSU (18-14, 5-4 OVC) scored its first run when Hawkins walked two and hit one Eagle batter in the first inning. The run came home on an RBI single to center field by
Eric Bainer, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double.
The Eagles added to their advantage with a pair of runs in the third and four more in the fourth. A two-run triple by
Andrew Deeds highlighted MSU’s four-run inning. The triple was the 13th of Deeds’ career. He holds the program mark for triples in a season and career triples.
Freshman starter
Blake Smith earned his third win of the season. He tossed six innings, the first three of which were hitless frames, and allowed two runs.
Center fielder Mitch Matecki paced the SIUE (14-17, 3-6 OVC) offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run.
Reliever
Morgan Cirbo pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and earned his first save of the season.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they face non-conference opponent Georgetown College at Allen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET
