HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Left-handed starter
Garrick Whittle tossed seven stellar innings and the Morehead State baseball team posted a 7-2 victory over Conference USA foe Marshall on Tuesday at the Kennedy Center.
Whittle fanned six in his seventh appearance of the season, and earned his first win of the 2012 campaign.
The Thundering Herd (13-23) plated the first run of the contest in the second when Gray Stafford came home on a groundout by second baseman Andrew Dundon.
MSU answered with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of third baseman
Andrew Deeds. Deeds, who entered the week tied for second nationally in hits, recorded two versus Marshall.
The Eagles (22-15) extended their lead in the fifth and sixth frames. Designated hitter
Eric Bainer drove in a run on a double in the fifth and outfielder
Duran Elmore contributed a two-run round-tripper in the sixth, his third home run this season.
Marshall starter Waylan Moore took the loss, his second of the year. He pitched three innings, allowed four runs, two of which were earned, and three hits.
Right fielder Eric Escobedo led Marshall at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Eagles travel to Charleston, Ill., this weekend to face Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Illinois. The three-game series begins Friday at 5 p.m. ET.
