Eagle Baseball Rallies to Defeat Southeast Missouri 16-14

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State baseball relied on three high-scoring innings to defeat Ohio Valley Conference opponent Southeast Missouri 16-14 and earn the series victory Sunday at Allen Field.

The Eagles (21-15, 7-5 OVC) plated six runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and five in the eighth inning to earn the win.

Two-hit through the first three innings and trailing by six runs, the Eagles scored six in the fourth frame. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double courtesy of third baseman Andrew Deeds. He finished the day with two hits and a walk.

SEMO (11-26, 3-9 OVC) regained the advantage in the fifth scoring three runs on a Trenton Moses home run to right. The Redhawk third baseman went 5-for-5 in the finale, with two home runs and five RBI.

MSU retook the lead in the fifth. Second baseman Jeff Birkofer and right fielder Nick Duff scored four of the Eagles five runs on a pair of two-run doubles. Birkofer was one of three Eagles with a multi-hit outing, his eighth of the year.

The Redhawks trailed by two runs going into the seventh, but once again edged MSU on the scoreboard with a three-run seventh. A two-run single through the right side by right fielder Jason Blum capped the inning.

The Eagles rallied once more with five runs in the eighth. SEMO reliever Tony Zerrusen allowed three runs in the inning and took the loss, his first of the season.MSU took advantage of two errors and notched five hits in the frame. Left fielder Taylor Pickens drove a three-run double through the left side to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish.  

Junior closer Matt Duncan earned his second win of the season pitching 1.2 innings of relief.  

Redhawk shortstop Kenton Parmley extended his OVC-leading 44-game hitting streak with a leadoff triple in the first inning.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday as they travel to Huntington, W. Va., to face Conference USA opponent Marshall at 3 p.m. ET.
