MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Freshman
Aaron Goe tossed 7.1 innings of two-run baseball Friday night at Allen Field to lead Morehead State past Ohio Valley Conference opponent Southeast Missouri 7-2 in game one of a three-game set.
Goe scattered nine hits en route to his third win. He held the reigning OVC Player of the Year, Trenton Moses, to one hit in three at-bats.
"We played well in all facets of the game tonight," said Head Coach
Jay Sorg. "Goe pitched like a conference number one today. Defensively we rolled three double plays and had a couple of highlight catches in the outfield. The offense did a good job of coming up with quality at-bats in pressure situations."
MSU (20-14, 6-4 OVC) posted a four-run third inning to overcome an early Redhawk lead. All four runs came on two outs, and first baseman
Cole Cleveland highlighted the frame with a two-run single to right field.
The Eagles extended their 4-1 lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring one and two runs, respectively. Designated hitter
Drew Williams capped the Eagle scoring with a two-run round-tripper to left field in the fifth, one of his three hits on the night. He has now recorded back-to-back three-hit contests.
Redhawk (10-25, 2-8 OVC) shortstop Kenton Parmley, who had a team-best three hits, kept his now 42-game hitting streak alive with a double in the third inning. With his hit, Parmley tied the OVC record for longest hitting streak held by Austin Peay’s Chuck Abbott in 1996.
Left-handed starter Christian Hull took the Redhawk loss, his sixth of the season. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowed 10 hits and seven runs.
The Eagles return to action versus SEMO Saturday at Allen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
