MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Head Volleyball Coach Jaime Gordon, who guided the Eagles to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2011 and led MSU to its third Ohio Valley Conference championship in the last four seasons, has been awarded a contract extension through the 2015 season.
“Coach Gordon has shown tremendous leadership qualities with our volleyball program in the last nine years. His teams have been successful athletically, academically, and in the community,” said MSU Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson. “He has been instrumental in generating a significant revenue stream for our volleyball team and our athletic department, and I couldn’t be happier with him leading our team as we continue to enhance our program through new facilities and projects.”
The Eagles finished with a school-record 19 conference wins in 2011 and highlighted the year with the OVC Tournament championship as well. He has taken an already highly-successful program (654 all-time wins) to new heights with six straight 20-win seasons.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity Brian Hutchinson and (University President) Dr. (Wayne) Andrews have extended me to remain the volleyball coach here at MSU,” said Gordon. “I can’t imagine a better administration to work for, or a more passionate group of student-athletes to work with. This is an exciting time to be a part of Morehead State volleyball. With projects that are on the horizon, a first-class coaching staff in place, and the talent that will be joining our program in the upcoming years, I am confident the best is yet to come for this program.”
In his nine seasons, Gordon has mentored five teams to OVC titles and has 175 career wins as MSU’s leader. MSU is 36-2 in conference matches the last two years and has led the league in home attendance for the past several years.
He came to MSU in 2003 and was named OVC Coach of the Year in his inaugural campaign, leading the Eagles to a 22-10 mark. He also earned the OVC Coach of the Year accolade in 2010 after guiding his squad to a 17-1 league finish.
MSU has won four straight OVC Team Academic Awards and four consecutive American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Awards. Under his leadership, 66 MSU players have been named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 16 have won an OVC Academic Medal of Honor. On the court, he has helped the first two players in school history earn All-America honors from the AVCA, four student-athletes earn AVCA All-Region status, three Eagle players to be named OVC Freshman of the Year and one to be named OVC Player of the Year.
Two of the volleyball coaching staff’s last three recruiting classes have been deemed top 60 in the nation by prepvolleyball.com – a leading web site evaluating collegiate talent.
“This is a very special place made up of some of the most quality individuals I have ever been around," he continued. "I am truly blessed."
