OXFORD, Ohio -- With the help of a seven-run fifth inning, the Morehead State baseball team earned a 15-2 victory over Miami University in the series finale Sunday at McKie Field.
The Eagles (10-10) trailed 2-0 and had recorded just three hits entering the fifth. MSU recorded five consecutive singles to start the frame. Outfielder
Taylor Pickens scored the first Eagle runs of the game, firing a two-run single through the right side. After tying the game 2-2, MSU added five more runs, two of which came on a two-run double by first baseman
Cole Cleveland.
Freshman
Blake Smith earned the win in his first collegiate start. Smith tossed six innings, walked three, fanned two and allowed two earned runs.
The RedHawks (11-8) scored a run in the first as outfielder Bryce Redeker roped an RBI single into left, one of his team-high two hits, scoring second baseman Ryan Brenner from second. Catcher John Crummy plated the only other Miami run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
MSU scored a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth. The RedHawks committed three throwing errors in the sixth that allowed an Eagle run to score without a hit. Second baseman
Jeff Birkofer and Pickens each drove in a run in the seventh, Birkofer’s came on his first triple of the season. Senior
Luke Bainer plated two of the Eagles five seventh inning runs on a single to left.
A trio of Eagles recorded three-hit games led by Pickens whose three singles netted three MSU runs.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday as they face Berea College at Allen Field. The game is a scheduled 4 p.m. ET first pitch.
