Volleyball Impressive in Spring Action Against Xavier

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State volleyball team looked impressive in a spring match against Xavier this week. The Eagles played four sets against the Musketeers and won all four, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-14.

“I was pleased with the way we competed tonight. Xavier is a strong, disciplined, well coached team. I felt that our execution across the board was solid. They had several very aggressive servers and our team was very consistent in our serve receive," said coach Jaime Gordon. “ We placed a lot of focus since our matches against UK and Notre Dame on our first contact efficiency and the tempo at which we were running our middle attack. Tonight both of those areas were extremely effective. In order for our middles to be effective against that kind of blocking scheme we need to be in system and run a very quick offense. I thought our middles did a great job attacking first tempo seams in their block, and our pin hitters were exceptional in executing.”

MSU's outside hitters were also impressive, according to Gordon.

“Our outsides did a really nice job recognizing open shots when they were available. I was even more pleased with the way that they created shots in out-of-system situations.”

Gordon also felt that of all his team's spring matches so far, the Xavier match was MSU's best all-around effort.

“Overall this was our best performance of the spring, but our goal is to make sure that we get even better going into this weekend."

The Eagles will play in Cincinnati on Saturday, April 23. MSU is scheduled to face the host Cincinnati Bearcats, the Wright State Raiders, and the Ohio State Buckeyes at UC's Lindner Center. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
