MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State University Director of Athletics
Brian Hutchinson announced Tuesday that the school has agreed to terms of a new contract with men’s basketball coach
Donnie Tyndall.
The four-year agreement will pay the fifth-year coach $230,000 per year, which will place him at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference.
“Coach Tyndall’s impact on our program and on MSU has been simply tremendous over the last five years,” Hutchinson said. “His work has certainly had a positive effect on our basketball team, our athletic department and the institution, so we’ve offered this gesture to lock up the future leadership of our basketball program. Donnie knows we want him to lead the Eagles for as long as he wishes. This is a significant step that demonstrates our commitment to the high expectations we have.”
Tyndall, who just completed his fifth season at his alma mater, tied the MSU record for wins with 25 with an upset win over fourth-seeded Louisville in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the Eagles second win in the NCAA Tournament under Tyndall.
“I would like to thank President Wayne Andrews, Brian Hutchinson and the entire university leadership for providing me the opportunity to continue to build on the success that we have all shared here at MSU,” Tyndall said. “As a Morehead State Alumnus, I am particularly appreciative of all the support that the entire MSU community has shown to me and my family. I am very proud to be an Eagle.”
A 1993 Morehead State graduate, Tyndall took over a program in 2006 that had won four games the previous year. Tyndall increased MSU’s win total to 12 his second year, 20 his third year and 24 last year. He increased the programs standing in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) from 321 the year prior to his arrival to 72 this season.
Tyndall returned to his alma mater after spending over 10 years as a Division I assistant with stops at Idaho, LSU and Middle Tennessee State.
A 40-year-old native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Tyndall played for MSU for three seasons (1990-93). He earned a bachelor’s degree from MSU (1993) and a master’s degree from LSU. Tyndall has two daughters, Taylor Elise and Grace Elizabeth.
