SURREY, B.C. – Former Eagle All-American defensive back David Hyland has signed a practice roster contract with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League the Club announced Tuesday.
Hyland just completed his first season in the Arena Football League with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The Yard Dawgz voted Hyland as their Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Hyland finished the 2010 campaign with 92 tackles, eight interceptions, 15 pass break-ups, five forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries. Hyland also had three defensive touchdowns, two fumble recovery scores and one interception return.
In his debut for Oklahoma City, Hyland had a 56 yard interception return for a touchdown that was named Russell Athletics Play of the Game and in week 12 against Dallas Hyland was voted AFL Defensive Player of the Week after grabbing two interceptions and forcing a fumble.
He was also very active in the community; he visited area hospitals, elementary schools, and was a guest of honor for the Lions Club. For his efforts in the community he was honored with his team’s Community Service Award.
Prior to Oklahoma City, Hyland attended the Cleveland Browns rookie training camp in 2009.
Hyland had an impressive career while at MSU. In his junior season he was named Sports Network All-America Third Team. He was a Sport Network and Football Gazette Mid Major All-American in 2007. Hyland was a three time All-PFL First Team defensive back selection. In 2007 Hyland was NCAA Division I FCS national statistical champion in interceptions per game. Hyland holds the FCS record for passes defended in a career (61) and has school records for interceptions in a season (8), interceptions in a career (21), tied the record for interceptions in a game (3), and has the longest interception return in school history (100 yards).
