Women's Track Earns USTFCCCA Academic Honor

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women's track and field program has been honored as a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for the 2010 season.

The Eagles, under the leadership of coach Tommy Barksdale, were one of six Ohio Valley Conference women's program to earn the distinction, but MSU compiled the highest team GPA in the league at 3.48. That figure also ranked as the sixth best team GPA in the country.

In July, the women's track team also earned the OVC Team Academic Award. The team placed 11 members on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and had three OVC Medal of Honor winners.

Women's Tennis

Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins.

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles. Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne, winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Ty Proffitt

Men's Basketball

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State.

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech.

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts. He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
