Women's Golf Wins Tri-Match
MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State women’s golf opened the 2010-11 season with an eight-stroke win in the Eastern Kentucky-Marshall-Morehead State Tri-Match. The Eagles carded a 292 in the 18-hole event, played at MSU’s Par 72, 5,981-yard Eagle Trace Golf Course.

The 292 was the lowest single team round since Morehead State resurrected the women’s golf program three years ago. It beat a 293 shot at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in 2008. Eastern Kentucky was second on Sunday, shooting a 300 and Marshall finished third with a 316.

“Two people shot 71, and anytime we can do that that’s really impressive. Sofie Petterson shot a 74, that’s really solid and she’s a freshman and then we also counted a 76 so all in all a really solid day for the Eagles,” Morehead State coach Stephanie Barker said.

Senior Paige Lausier and sophomore Marisa Kamelgarn tied with Marshall’s Alison Harper for first place with a 71. Kamelgarn won the two-hole playoff with a birdie on hole 11. Lausier had four birdies in her 18-hole round and Kamelgarn had three. Harper also had three birdies.

Eagle freshman Sofia Petterson, playing as MSU’s #3 in her first collegiate event, shot a 74 with one birdie. She parred 15 of the 18 holes to tie for fourth. Lynn Grunkemeyer tied for ninth overall with a 76. Emma Jonsson carded a 79 to finish 15th overall.

MSU also had three players playing as individuals. Junior Karolina Tunstig shot a 77, including a nice off-the-green chip shot to birdie nine and tie for 12th overall. Sophomore Emma Eksell finished tied for seventh by shooting a 34 on the front nine with two birdies en route to a total of 75. Freshman Amalie Munck, also playing in her first collegiate event, finished with an 80, placing her tied for 16th.

Harper was Marshall’s top finisher and EKU’s Katie Wiedmar and Linda Hogberg each carded a 74 to tie for fourth overall.

The Eagles play in their first regular season tournament Sept. 13-14. MSU heads to Paducah, Ky. to play in the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational.
