MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State soccer team will travel to the Buckeye state this weekend to battle a pair of Mid-American Conference foes. On Friday Aug. 27, the Eagles face the Toledo Rockets at Scott Park in Toledo at 5 p.m. and then will square off with the Akron Zips at newly renovated Lee Jackson Field at 1 p.m. in Akron on Sunday Aug. 29.
The Eagles (0-2-0) come into the match having dropped a pair of games last weekend to Cincinnati 2-1 and Purdue 4-0. The Eagles held a 1-0 advantage for most of the first half against Cincinnati, following a goal from senior forward
Erin Adams in the 5th minute. The Bearcats then snuck two goals past Eagle goalkeeper
Lily Meisner to complete the comeback. Last Sunday, MSU was outshot 25-2 by the Boilermakers on their way to a 4-0 loss. Meisner has played all 180:00 minutes in net for the Eagles this season and has 17 saves thus far.
The Toledo Rockets (1-1-0) spilt a pair of road games against Purdue and Dayton. The Rockets defeated Purdue in the season opener last Friday 1-0 in overtime. Following a handball three minutes into the extra session, junior Kristen Lynn fired her penalty shot into the net for the game winner. Toledo then faced nationally ranked #21 Dayton last Sunday, but was defeated 2-1. The Rockets are a very balanced team, 13 different players have taken a shot so far this season. Junior goalkeeper Vicki Traven has posted 11 saves in two games. Toledo is coached by Brad Evans who is 90-72-20 in his 11th season for the Rockets.
The Akron Zips (1-0-0) opened the season at home last Friday defeating Illinois State 3-0. Sophomore forward Katie Wise fired a hat-trick for the Zips scoring all three of her goals in the final ten minutes of the second half. Junior goalkeeper Jenny Wolbert posted the shut-out, notching five saves in the effort. Another player to watch is senior forward Jordan Clark who launched two shots in the game, both on goal. Junior forward Rachel Phillip is the twin sister of Eagle mid-fielder
Sarah Phillip. Rachel was the Zips leading scorer a season ago. Akron is coached by Chris Pfau he is 17-16-4 in his third season for the Zips.
The Eagles will return home to the friendly confines of Jayne Stadium on Sunday Sept. 5 and host Wright State; kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
