WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue scored three times in the second half and defeated Morehead State 4-0 in soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex.
Purdue got on the board in the 18th minute, when Kellie Phillips fired a shot into the upper right corner from 22 yards out. Katie Leinart was credited with the assist.
“Purdue was a quality team. They were very athletic and technically sound. They played well” said MSU coach
Warren Lipka.
Purdue’s Marta Lynch scored an early second half goal in the 47th minute to extend the lead 2-0. Rachel Kimack snuck a shot past Eagle goalkeeper
Lily Meisner in the 76th minute and Lynch notched her second goal of the match in the 86th minute to finish the scoring for Purdue.
Meisner tallied nine saves on the afternoon. Purdue limited MSU’s goal-scoring chances, only allowing the Eagles two shots from the field and three kicks from the corner pocket. Purdue launched 25 shots and had 11 corner kicks.
“We like to play teams of this caliber early in the season to see what our weaknesses are. We are not quite as fit as I want us to be. We have to get into game fitness and we have to learn to play with more passion,” Lipka said
Devan Jordan and
Erin Adams had the lone shots for the Eagles.
The loss drops the Eagles’ record to 0-2-0 on the season. Purdue improves to 1-1-0.
Morehead State will continue their road trip next weekend when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to battle the Rockets on Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. and then to Akron, Ohio to face the Zips on Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
