MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State men’s basketball coach
Donnie Tyndall announced his third signing of the spring season, inking Lamont Austin to a National Letter of Intent.
A 6-1, 175-lb. guard from Topeka, Kan., Austin is joining Morehead State after two successful seasons at Howard Junior College, where he won a NJCAA National Championships this past season. He will have two years of eligibility beginning with the 2010-2011 season. Austin averaged 10.9 points and 3.9 assists last year for coach Mark Adams at Howard. He shot 46.4 percent from the field and averaged 2.4 steals.
“Lamont is a proven winner. He won two state championships in high school and a national championship in junior college,” Tyndall said. “He is a selfless guy who worries only about winning! Lamont can create for himself and his teammates and I feel he can be a very good defender at our level."
Austin led Highland Park High School to a perfect 25-0 season, including a perfect 13-0 Centennial League record as a senior in the Kansas Class 5A state championship. Highland Park had a winning record each year while Austin was there, including winning a state title when he was a freshman. He was the Topeka City League Player of the Year, earning all-conference honors as both a junior and senior. Austin was also an all-state selection during his final two years at Highland Park and honorable mention his first two years. He initially attended Missouri State before transferring to Howard College.
Morehead State finished the 2009-10 season at 24-11, one win shy of the school record for victories. It was the first time in MSU history the Eagles have had back-to-back 20-win seasons. MSU also set a school record with 15 OVC wins during the regular season
