MURRAY, Ky. – Drew Lee broke the career record for doubles and homered, but it wasn't enough as Morehead State dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Murray State 7-5. The second game was suspended due to rain after the Eagles had tied the game in the top of the seventh. Winston Bodrick scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to tie game two at four. Since rain washed out Sunday's action as well, Saturday's second game will end in a tie.
Game One Recap
Murray State used a four-run seventh inning to grab a two-run lead and hold on to win Saturday’s first game 7-5 over Morehead State. A two-run homer by Bryan Propst gave the Racers the lead, while
Drew Lee homered, broke the Morehead State career record for doubles, and went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles.
A solo bomb to right field by Lee gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. It was the 16th home run of the season for the senior slugger and his 65th RBI of the season.
Murray State tied the game up in the bottom of the second when Cory Hodskins doubled to left center and Kyle Tiernan drove him in with a single to right field.
The Racers then took the lead in the bottom of the third. Zach Noonan singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to third when Eagle starter
Michael Bottoms delivered ball four to Wes Cunningham in the dirt and the pitch squirted back to the back stop. Noonan then scored on a line out sacrifice fly by Propst.
Murray State grabbed another run in the fourth after placing runners on second and third with just one out. Bottoms got Elliot Frey to strike out before Noonan singled through the left side to score Colton Moore. Bottoms then got Brandon Elliot to ground out to
Michael Fear at first to end the inning.
The Eagles jumped back in front in the sixth when they put a three spot up. Lee led off the inning with a ground rule double down the right field line, his 18th double of the season and the 58th of his career, breaking the previous career mark held by Brad Allison who played from 1993-96. Lee then scored on a double by
Cameron Flynn to right center.
Taylor Davis then roped a triple down the right field line to score Flynn and tie the game at three. Bottoms then helped his own cause when he singled back through the box to plate Davis give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.
Morehead State grabbed another run in the seventh as Davis drove in Lee with a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
Murray State stormed back in the bottom of the seventh as Noonan singled and then scored on a double by Elliot. Elliot was then plated on a triple down the right field line by Cunningham to tie the game at five and chase Bottoms from the game. Propst then hit a two-run homer to left off reliever
Josh Schneider to give the Racers a 7-5 lead.
Racer reliever Matt McGaha then got MSU to go in order in the eighth and allowed a lead-off walk to Lee in the ninth before retiring the side to close out the game.
Davis tallied two RBIs in the contest as well. Bottoms was handed the loss after pitching six innings and allowing six.
The loss drops the Eagles record to 24-22 and 6-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Game Two Recap
A wet and wacky second game was halted by rain and thunder showers after seven innings after Morehead State had come back to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Since rain also washed out Sunday’s play, the game will go down as a tied contest.
Winston Bodrick scored on a wild pitch as the rain fell in the top of the seventh to tie the game at four. Bodrick was pinch running for Michael Fear who had singled to lead off the inning. Travis Redmon popped up a bunt that went over the head of charging Murray State third baseman Cory Hodskins to place two on with no outs. After J.D. Ashbrook struck out, Daniel Pugh grounded out to second, but moved the runners over to second and third in the process and Drew Lee was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Thoroughbred starter Jake Donze’s first pitch to Michael Bottoms sailed to the backstop allowing Bodrick to score the tying run.
Ashbrook’s 18th home run of the season gave Morehead State the lead in the fifth inning. The blast drove in Travis Redmon who had singled up the middle and made the score 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
The ‘Breds grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth, as they plated 3 runs. The scoring started when Elliot Frey laid down a squeeze bunt and Kyle Tiernan was able to slide past the tag of Taylor Davis. After Zach Noonan walked to load the bases with still nobody out, Wes Cunningham hit a shallow fly into left field. Left fielder Daniel Pugh and shortstop Drew Lee collided chasing down the blooper, with Pugh holding on the make the catch. However, the collision allowed Drew Pixley to score and give Murray State a 3-2 lead. The Racers added on another run when Bryan Propst singled threw the left side, before a groundout by Colton Moore ended the inning.
The Eagles got one run back in the sixth, after Michael Bottoms doubled, advanced to third on a fly out by Cameron Flynn and scored on a ground out by Davis.
Murray State got on the board first when they plated a run in the bottom of the first. Brandon Elliott singled with one out to get on. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Taylor Davis. Bryan Propst then singled down the left field line to drive in the game’s opening run.
Morehead State starter Matthew Robertson had pitched seven innings and given up four runs, all unearned in the contest.
The Eagles now take a 6-9-1 conference mark into the final series of the regular season, a three-game series with Jacksonville State at Allen Field beginning Friday with a double header at 1:00 p.m. EST.
