MSU Women's Netters Drop A 6-1 Decision To Tennesse Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Morehead State women’s tennis team lost their first conference match of the season 6-1 to OVC foe Tennessee Martin Friday afternoon at the Skyhawk Varsity Courts. The Eagles are now 8-11 on the year with a 5-1 mark in OVC play.

The Eagles lost two of three matches to the Skyhawks in doubles play surrendering an early 1-0 deficit. At number one Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney were victorious over Jodie Tiley and Alice Laing 8-7 (3) and at number two Alexandra Rydberg and Alix Young fell 8-6 to Martie Wahl and Belisa de Brtio. In the three spot Brooke Helms and Kayla Tuscany were bested 8-1 by Anna Winkelmann and Anna Marie Herbold.

In singles action the Eagles didn’t fair well, losing five of six. At number one Young was beat by Tiley 6-3, 6-0 and at number two Rydberg was defeated by Wahl 6-1, 6-2. In the three spot Tuscany lost 7-5, 6-3 and in the four spot Antero fell to Johanie Van Zyl 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. At number five Delaney lost 6-1, 6-1 to de Brito and getting the only victory in singles for the Eagles was Helms in the sixth spot, as she won 7-5, 6-2 over Herbold.

The Eagles will be in action again on Saturday April 3 against Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
