DICKSON, Tenn.--
Paced by three players in the top 10, including two in the top three, Morehead State women’s golf is tied for first place after the first round of the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The first round of the 54-hole tournament was played Thursday at the 6,049-yard par 72 GreyStone Golf Club.

The Eagles jockeyed among the top three positions all day, along with Murray State and Jacksonville State. MSU finished the first 18 with a 304, equaling JSU to tie for first place. Murray had been leading on the late holes, but slipped two strokes behind the leaders and into third place.

“I'm proud of the way our team played today. We hit some great shots and had quite a few birdies. I know there are a couple of holes out there we would like to play better,” MSU coach Stephanie Barker said.

Morehead State freshman Marisa Kamelgarn had five birdies, including four of her final five holes to shake off a rough start and rally into the lead for the Eagles and second place overall with a one-over 73.
Sophomore Emma Jonsson tied for third overall with a 75, placing her second for the Eagles. She had three birdies and played most of the other holes even.

Junior Paige Lausier is third for the Eagles and tied for 10th overall with a 77. Seniors Ashley Redmond and Darlene Bognot each shot a 79 to tie for 18th overall.

“I am confident in our ability to learn from our mistakes today and put ourselves in position to play even more solid over the next two rounds.” Barker added.

Austin Peay is currently in fourth place with a 308, followed by Eastern Illinois in fifth with a 315. Eastern Kentucky shot a 318 to place sixth and Tennessee Tech checked in at 327 for seventh. Tennessee State’s 374 rounded out the eight-team field.

Austin Peay’s Chelsea Harris leads all players with a 1-under 71, just two strokes ahead of Kamelgarn.

The Eagles will play round two with Murray and Jacksonville. The three leading teams tee off beginning at 10:10 a.m. The field will play 27 holes Friday due to impending weather Saturday and will play just nine holes Saturday if possible.  Live Scoring will be available for the entire tournament.
