Four Eagles Named To Pioneer League All-Academic Teams

MOREHEAD, Ky.—Four Morehead State players have been named to the Pioneer Football League All-Academic Teams the league announced Tuesday.

Andrew Doan and Wes McDermott were both named to the All-Academic Second Team Defense and Desmond Cox and Ronnie McDermott earned All-Academic Second-Team Offense.

Louisville native Ronnie McDermott, a business administration major and member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll, appeared in all 11 games last season, leading the team with 30 catches for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 10.3 yards per catch and tallied 381 all-purpose yards.

Cox, an Akron, Ohio native, also appeared in all 11 games. He led the team with 305 net rushing yards and one touchdown on a team-high 80 carries He also recorded 15 catches for 102 yards and led the team in kickoff returns with 17 for 358 yards and a long of 44 yards. A Sports Management major, Cox is also a member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll.

Doan had nine sacks and was second only to team leader Wes McDermott in tackles for loss with 14.5. Named to the All-PFL Second Team defensive squad, Doan is a Dublin, Ohio native and a Psychology major. He is a member of the PFL Academic Honor Roll

A four-year member of the PFL Honor Roll, Wes McDermott won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honor after finishing the regular-season ranked second in tackles (9.9 pg) and third in tackles for loss (1.50 pg). He led all linebackers in tackles (109), posting 14 more than the next closest follower. A Business Administration major and also a Louisville native, Wes is Ronnie’s older brother.

Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution.
