MSU Women's Tennis Falls In First Round, 4-1 To Rival EKU

PADUCAH, Ky. –
The Morehead State women’s tennis team was defeated in the first round of the 2010 Ohio Valley Tennis Tournament by arch-rival Eastern Kentucky 4-1, Friday afternoon at the Heflin Tennis Center in Paducah, Ky. The Eagles fell behind early in the match 1-0 when the Colonels took the first two doubles matches.

In doubles action, the Eagles lost the first two matches and suffered an early 1-0 deficit in the match. At number two Alix Young and Alexandra Rydberg were bested by Anouk Faure and Alyze Pagal 8-3 and in the three spot Kayla Tuscany and Alix Lakow were beat by EKU’s pair of Myriem Mhirit and Catarina Branco 8-1. Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney played in the one spot, however their match was unfinished as EKU already took the first two decisive matches.

In singles play, Antero notched the only victory for the Eagles as she beat Branco 6-3, 6-1. In the two spot Rydberg came up short of Jessica Albuquerque 6-1, 7-6, (7-1) and in the three spot Tuscany was beat by Faure 6-2, 6-4. Delaney lost to Anais Hamel 6-4, 6-3 in the fifth position. Young played at number one and Helms played at number six, however their matches went unfinished as EKU sealed the match with their fourth point, to win 4-1 over the Eagles.

The Eagles finished the year with a 9-14 record. This was the Eagles first appearance in the OVC Tennis Tournament since 2004.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
