Eagle Netters Set For OVC Tennis Tournament First Round

PADUCAH, Ky. – The Morehead State tennis teams will be in action on Friday in the first round of the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Tournament at the Heflin Tennis Center. This is the first time under coach Kevin Fulton that both teams will be competing in the tourney.

The men’s team finished with an overall record of 10-8 this year and was 4-3 in OVC play. In doubles action the Eagles will go with Greg Anderson and Jerry Sundgren (7-5) at number one, Bradley Bryan and Lovell Medcalf (11-3) at number two and Nathan Martin and Nathan Blum (10-6) at number three. In singles play the Eagles are led by Second Team All-Conference selection Martin who went 5-2 in conference play. At number one and two singles, Anderson and Sundgren have done most of the work, and Bryan has been very strong at number three. In the four spot, MSU has gone with Blum and in the fifth spot Dusan Milovanovic rounds it out for the Eagles. The Eagles will be playing in the tournament for the second year in a row and have earned a No. 4 seed. MSU will be playing No. 5 seed Austin Peay at 11:00 a.m. ET., who they defeated earlier in the year 4-3.

On the women’s side, the Eagles finished the year with an overall record of 9-13 and were 6-3 in conference play. This will be the Eagles first appearance since 2004 as they earned a No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed Eastern Kentucky at 3:00 p.m. ET. The Eagles defeated EKU 4-3 earlier this year in Richmond. In doubles action the Eagles will be led by Second Team All-Conference selection Madeleinne Antero who teams up with Lauren Delaney handling duties at number one, the tandem went 9-8 on the season. In the two spot Alix Young and Alexandra Rydberg went 8-5 and at number three doubles Kayla Tuscany has partnered with both Brooke Helms and Alix Lakow. In singles play the Eagles will have Young and Rydberg play number one and number two, with Tuscany at the three position. Antero and Delaney have been strong all year at the four and five positions. Also vital to the Eagle’s success this year was Helms in the sixth spot, going 8-1 in conference play.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
