RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior pitcher
Alex Gjevre struck out a season high 12 batters, while the Morehead State softball also got two-run homers from
Kayla Brill and
Ashley Archer as MSU rallied past host Eastern Kentucky 4-2 Wednesday at Gertrude Hood Field.
The Eagles’ win allowed them to take the series from the Colonels, two games to one, and MSU improved to 10-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 20-16 overall. EKU fell to 12-28 and 6-8 in the league.
“We had a couple of big hits from Kayla and Ashley. I think we need to have more timely hitting more often, but I was impressed how we took charge of the game in the second inning after being down 2-0,” said Holly Bruder. “
Gjevre (11-8/8-1 OVC) allowed two runs in the first inning but then mowed down EKU the rest of the way. She recorded two strikeouts in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and only allowed one earned run overall. She worked out of bases loaded, one-out jam in the third inning by tallying two strikeouts and finished the complete game victory with her 12th punchout.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the second, the Eagles tied the contest on Archer’s two-out two-run homer over the left field fence off EKU starter Stacy Toups (6-6). It marled Archer’s second round-tripper of the year.
Bianca Cardenas came around to score on the play. She had singled down the right field line earlier in the frame.
MSU gained the lead for good in the top of the third when Brill drilled a first pitch offering from Toups out over the fence in left. It also scored
Anna Sommer, who had singled up the middle. The blast drove Toups from the game, and Kristen Perry came in to relieve. Brill’s homer was her third clout of the year.
Perry and Gjevre battled for the final four innings. Perry only gave up two hits and had five strikeouts. Gjevre recorded nine of her 12 Ks after the third inning.
MSU finished with seven hits, while the Colonels also tallied seven hits off Gjevre.
The Eagles travel to Austin Peay this coming weekend for a three-game OVC series. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. EST.
