Women's Tennis Falls To Jacksonville State 6-1

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Morehead State women’s tennis team was defeated 6-1 by Ohio Valley Conference opponent Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts. With the loss the Eagles are now 9-13 overall and 6-3 in OVC action.

The Eagles fell behind 1-0 early, getting swept in the doubles matches. At number one Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney fell 8-2 and in the two spot Alix Young and Alexandra Rydberg came up just short 9-7. At number three Alix Lakow and Kayla Tuscany were barely edged 8-6 by Wenzel and Fuller.

The Eagles struggled in the singles only winning one match, which came in the sixth spot by Brooke Helms as she beat Fuller 6-2, 6-4. At number one Young was bested 7-6, 6-4 by Marani and in the two spot Rydberg was beat by Dessbesell 6-1, 6-2. Tuscany was beat by Ferris 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at number three and in the four spot Antero was downed by Wenzel 7-6, 6-4. Rounding it for the Eagles in the five spot was Delaney who battled touch but came up just short of Renesto 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

The Eagles have clinched a spot in the 2010 OVC Tennis Tournament which will be held on April 16 in Paducah, Ky. The official bracket is expected to be released Monday April 12.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
