Men's Netters Downed 5-2 At Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Morehead State men’s tennis team won all of the doubles matches, but then couldn’t hold onto the lead and eventually lost to Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts. The Eagles are now 10-8 overall on the season and have a 4-3 record in OVC play.

At number one doubles Greg Anderson and Jerry Sundgren won 9-7 over JSU’s pair of Duke and Sunberg. Bradley Bryan and Lovell Medcalf defeated Marcec and Holz 8-4. Wrapping up the sweep, Nathan Blum and Nathan Martin bested Kenyon and Watanabe 8-2. With the sweep the Eagles held an early 1-0 lead going into singles action.

In singles play, the Eagles lost five of six to the Gamecocks, with their only win coming in the sixth spot by Nathan Martin as he defeated Bellman in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. At number one Sundgren went down 6-1, 6-1 and in the two spot Anderson fell in battle 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Sunberg. Bryan and Blum both lost 6-2, 6-2 to Marcec and Duke in the three and four spots respectfully. Rounding it out for the Eagles at number five was Dusan Milovanovic who came up just short of Holz 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Despite the loss, the Eagles have clinched a spot in the 2010 OVC Tennis Tournament; the bracket is expected to be released Monday April 12. The tournament will be held in Paducah, Ky., on April 16.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
