MOREHEAD, Ky. - SIU Edwardsville will provide the opposition when the Morehead State softball team returns to University Field on Wednesday, March 10. First pitch for the scheduled doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.

The Eagles (3-8) showed marked improved over the weekend as they went 2-1 in their own Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational. MSU defeated Pitt and IPFW Saturday before falling by one run to Pitt Sunday. Senior pitchers Sarah Funston and Alex Gjevre really gave MSU a boost as Funston tossed six complete innings while striking out a season high 10 in the 9-1 win over IPFW and Gjevre pitched 11.2 innings of scoreless ball to go along with 13 strikeouts in the Pitt games. She was named OVC co-Pitcher of the Week.

Offensively the Eagles are still trying to find the right combination. Junior third baseman Rebecca Butler leads the team with a .303 batting average, but as a team the Eagles are hitting just higher than .200.

The Cougars, whose softball program will become the first team from SIUE to be eligible for an Ohio Valley Conference championship next season, were 9-9 before a Tuesday matchup with Missouri State. Whitney Davis tops the offense with a .340 batting average, while Lauren Zembruski has hit a team high three home runs.

Pitching-wise, the Cougars are led by workhorse Erika Taylor who has thrown 91 of the 123 total innings so far. She is 8-5 with a 2.31 ERA.

SIUE and Morehead State have only ever met once and that was last season on a neutral field in Indianapolis where MSU won the contest.

After Wednesday, the Eagles will head north to Athens, Ohio for a three-game series at Ohio University this weekend.
