MOREHEAD, Ky. – Jeff Arnold pitched seven innings, with a three-run home run in the third his only blemish, to lead the Morehead State Eagles past in-state NAIA rival Georgetown 12-3 Tuesday afternoon at Allen Field.
Michael Bottoms jacked a grand slam, while
Cameron Flynn and #J.D. Ashbrook# each went yard with solo jobs to help the Eagles level their record at 14-14 on the season.
MSU opened the scoring with a four-run bottom of the second, aided by a passed ball and an error.
Travis Redmon drove in the first run, beating out an infield single with the bases loaded. A passed ball by Tiger catcher Dylan Grandon and an error on third baseman Tyler Hatfield allowed the other three runs to come across.
Georgetown (14-14) answered in the third plating their only runs of the game on a three-run bomb from Chris Wood. It was one of only two innings that Arnold did not face the minimum as the right-hander dominates, allowing just the three runs on five hits in the outing.
MSU would pull away with a six-run fourth that saw the Eagles bat around and was highlighted by the grand slam from Bottoms, his first home run since the series finale against Buffalo.
Taylor Davis also drove in a run in the inning when he lined a pitch off Matt Smith’s thigh to allow Ashbrook to score from third.
The rest of the Eagle scoring would come on lead off home runs in the sixth and seventh by Flynn and Ashbrook. It was the ninth home run, fifth in as many games, of the season for Flynn and Ashbrook’s team-high 12th of the year.
Freshman hurler
Cody Gibson came in to pitch a scoreless eighth, while
Casey Branham got the final three outs in the ninth after
Michael Fahs allowed a lead-off hit.
The Eagles will be back in action this weekend with a three-game set against SIU-Edwardsville. First pitch on Friday is at 7:00 pm, with single games on Saturday and Sunday to follow.
