Evansville, Ind. – Evansville used three pitchers to hold Morehead State to just two runs on five hits, and cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Eagles Friday night in MSU’s first game of the University of Evansville Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic.
Evansville starter Keegan Dennis stymied the MSU offense for five-plus innings as the right-hander pitched into the sixth and allowed just three hits. Jake Naumann and Corey Davisson picked up where Dennis, left off and pitched the final four innings and allowed just two hits.
MSU finally strung together hits in the top of the sixth to break the shutout.
Eric Bainer doubled and
Andrew Deeds singled to lead off the inning and chase Dennis from the game. After Naumann recorded the first two outs of the inning,
Daniel Pugh drove in Bainer with a sacrifice fly to center field. #Drew Lee then drove in his team leading 25th RBI of the season by singling home Deeds.
That was all the offense the Eagles could muster however, and the Purple Aces scored in each of the last six innings to build the 9-2 lead. MSU starter
Tyler Hieneman was the hard luck loser, pitching five innings and allowing just three earned runs on four hits while striking out six. MSU errors in the fourth, fifth, and eighth helped the Evansville cause.
The Eagles best chance to cut into the Evansville lead came in the top of the eighth.
Travis Redmon led off the inning with a triple to the gap in right center. After
J.D. Ashbrook was retired, Pugh walked to put runners on the corner with just one out. The Eagles failed to take advantage however has Lee grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow when they take on Purdue at 12:00 p.m. in their second game of the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic.
Game Notes: Drew Lee extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
