Eagles Set To Face Evansville, Purdue, & LeMoyne In Weekend Tournament

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The Morehead State baseball team will travel to Evansville, Ind., this weekend to play in the University of Evansville Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic. The Eagles will kick-off the tournament against the Evansville Purple Aces on Friday at 4:00 p.m. MSU will then battle the Boilermakers of Purdue on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. will face the LeMoyne Dolphins.

Morehead State (6-9, 0-0) is fresh off an 11-5 victory over Transylvania Wednesday night. In that game, the Eagles scored 11 runs on 13 hits, while the Eagle pitchers held the Pioneers to eight hits and only three earned runs. Senior Drew Lee continues to lead the Eagles, Lee is batting .377 and leads the team in RBIs (24). Lee and fellow senior J.D. Ashbrook are tied for the team lead in home runs at six. Ashbrook leads the team in batting average at .418 and stolen bases with three. Daniel Pugh and Michael Bottoms have also been key to the Eagles offense this season. Pugh is second on the squad in batting average at .400 and Bottoms leads the team in doubles with six.

The Friday starter on the mound will be Tyler Hieneman. Hieneman is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in four appearances this season. On Saturday MSU will go with Bottoms who is 1-1 in three appearances with an ERA of 6.00 and senior hurler Quentin Morgan will get the nod on Sunday. Morgan is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 8.31.

Evansville (4-9) is led offensively by Cody Fick who is batting .352 and is tied for the team lead with four round trippers. The Purple Aces will throw Keegan Dennis against the Eagles who is 0-1 on the season in four appearances with a 4.72 ERA.

Purdue (1-6) is led at the plate by Kevin Plaweki who is batting .480 and leads the team in hits with 12. Eric Charles leads the Boilermakers in RBIs with 11 and is batting .357 on the season. The Eagles will face right hander Matt Morgan. Morgan carries a 3.65 ERA with no decisions in two starts this season.

LeMoyne (5-7) is led by Matt Marra on offense, Marra is batting .413 and is tied for the team lead in doubles (4) and triples (1). Chris Edmondson leads the Dolphins in RBIs with 12. Freshman Jerome Werniuk will get the call Sunday against MSU. Werniuk is 1-2 on the year with a 10.38 ERA.

The Eagles will be back in action on March 17 against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn., at 7:00 p.m.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
