MOREHEAD, Ky. -
Morehead State freshman infielder Amber Riddle shattered the Kentucky State high school record with a mind boggling 55 home runs at Rowan County Senior High School. On Wednesday, her career total started back at one.

Riddle blasted a three-run homer - her first career collegiate round tripper - and went 3-for-3 to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 win over SIU Edwardsville in game two of a doubleheader. The Cougars took advantage of a couple of MSU errors in game one to rally for a 4-3 win.

In the second game, MSU spotted SIUE a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Megan Murphy and Lindsey Barron led off against MSU starter Sarah Funston with back-to-back singles. Later in the inning, Whitney Davis singled home Barron, and Kasey Schlafke laid down a bunt that scored that plated Murphy.

The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the third. Freshman Anna Sommer reached via a Cougar infield fielding error, and senior catcher Bianca Cardenas walked. That set the stage for Riddle's towering three-run clout to left center field.

MSU went on to add two more in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Elizabeth Wagner smacked a two-out, two-run hit to right field that scored sophomore Sam Woodall and freshman Kayla Ashbrook.

Funston picked up the win for the Eagles to improve to 3-3. SIUE starter Ali Downing didn't allow an earned run but still was saddled with the loss. MSU senior Alex Gjevre pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed only one hit to collect her first save of the year. Gjevre came to the circle in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out but coaxed a line-out double play to end the inning.

The Eagles had seven hits. Woodall went 2-for-3 alongside Riddle's perfect hitting day.

In the opener, MSU held a 3-1 lead until the fifth inning when SIUE took advantage of two Eagle errors to score three runs and take the 4-3 lead they never relinquished. The Cougars got two hits off Gjevre in the frame but scored all runs unearned thanks to a throwing and a fielding error by MSU. SIUE also stole two bases in the inning to get its runners in scoring position.

The Eagles again spotted the Cougars an early advantage - 1-0 in the first. MSU rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the second as Bianca Cardenas led off with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Taylor Sherritt. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third and scored on the play when the throw went into left field.

MSU made it 3-1 in the fourth via junior Rebecca Butler's second home run of the year, a two-run job that also scored Wagner.

The Eagles had seven hits, including two by Askbrook. Gjevre took the loss to fall to 1-5 despite allowing just four total hits and one earned run. Cougar starter Erika Taylor picked up the victory to improve to 10-6. Lauren Zembruski had two hits and two RBI for the visitors.

The Eagles travel to Ohio University this weekend for a three-game series. On Saturday the teams start at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader, and a single game is set for Sunday at noon.
