Rifle Finishes Fifth At OVC Championships, Two Eagles Earn All-Conference Honors

MURRAY, Ky.--The Morehead State rifle team finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, which concluded Sunday afternoon at the Pat Spurgin Range at Murray State University.  After day one which was the smallbore event, the Eagles were in third place, but after day two and the air rifle the Eagles slipped two spots to a fifth place finish.

The Eagles shot an aggregate score of 4525 points to finish behind UT Martin's mixed team who shot 4533.  Murray State won the Championship after firing a score of 4595 and Jacksonville State took second with a score of 4577.  UT Martin women's team took third with a score of 4547, rounding out the field was Tennessee Tech with a score of 4446.  Murray's victory ended Jacksonville State's five-year run of OVC rifle titles.

Kevin Mulligan was named to the Smallbore All-Conference First Team firing a 575 which was good for fifth place individually.  Elizabeth Lyon earned Smallbore Second Team All-Conference Honors after she shot a 572 which was good for seventh place individually.  Rob Gagliani and Shawn Holley fired 556 and 554 which was good for 18th and 19th.

In the air rifle Lyon finished 10th after shooting a score of 578 and Kathleen Bush fired a score of 566 for 17th place.  Holley and Nicole Heitmeyer both shot 562 for 19th and 20th place. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Feb. 12 for the NCAA Sectional.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
