Morehead State University is relinquishing one of two national cheerleading championships won in January because of the participation of an ineligible student-athlete.
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Brian Hutchinson disclosed that MSU is vacating the coed cheer squad’s title won at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports at the Universal Cheerleaders Association sponsored competition in Orlando, Fla. This has resulted in the resignation of two athletic staff members.
The all-girl squad, which won its seventh national title, will retain its championship.
“It is regrettable that a squad member who was academically ineligible by Morehead State University’s regulations was allowed to compete,” Hutchinson said. “This constitutes a clear and serious violation of the University’s policy requiring student-athletes to be in good academic standing to participate in intercollegiate athletics.”
“Morehead State University remains committed to operating its athletics program with integrity,” he added.
