NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Morehead State softball team struggled on Sunday, dropping a 4-0 game to Fordham before falling 8-0 to Longwood at Captains Field on the campus on Christopher Newport University.
Senior pitcher Sarah Funston recorded five strikeouts against Fordham in pitching a complete game. However, the Rams' Jen Mineau again stymied the Eagle offense. A day after tossing a perfect game, MSU was held to only three hits Sunday.
Freshman Kayla Ashbrook recorded her first career hit along with hits from freshman Elizabeth Wagner and senior Courtney Seiler.
"It was really disappointing to start 1-3, but I thought that Sarah (Funston) threw phenomenal today," said head coach Holly Bruder. "We just didn't get any hits. We have to come back and work on our offense and defense this week."
The Eagles managed only three hits in the loss to Longwood. Junior Rebecca Butler went 2-for-3 while Ashbrook picked up her second hit.
Sophomore Ashley Boyd took the loss, pitching the first three innings and allowing four runs. Senior Alex Gjevre finished the game in the circle.
Morehead State travels to East Carolina University next weekend for the Pirate Classic. Action begins at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26 against Towson University.
