MOREHEAD, Ky.--Riding high after an eye-popping win at Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State men’s basketball keeps its 10-game winning streak on the road when it heads to Nashville to face Tennessee State.
The Eagles hold the fifth-longest winning streak in the nation and have won more consecutive games than any Morehead State team since the 1983-84 season when that MSU team won a school-record 12 straight wins. The Eagles have also won seven consecutive OVC games.
The win over rival Eastern Kentucky kept Morehead State in second place in the OVC standings, half a game behind Murray State. It also helped provide junior Kenneth Faried with his fourth OVC Player of the Week award this season. Faried had 20 points and 16 rebounds. Demonte Harper and Maze Stallworth, the teams second and third leading scorers respectively, both scored in double digits, rebounding nicely from struggling earlier in the week.
Morehead State beat TSU 72-66 in Johnson Arena early in January, and since then the Tigers have won just one game, beating UT Martin. Tennessee State is 4-17 overall and 1-8, but are athletic and can play with anyone in the league, which they proved in a two-point loss last week at Austin Peay. Senior Les Simmons scored 13 points, including 10 in the second half, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Morehead State in the first meeting, in whcich the Eagles out-rebounded TSU by 17.
Josh Sain’s 14.7 points per game continues to lead the Tigers, but Jacquan Nobles and Robert Covington average 10.2 and 10.1 points resepctively. Covington also leads the Tigers on the board at 5.8 per game. The first time against Morehead State, Nobles led all scorers with 20 points and Sain had 17 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
After Thursday, MSU travels just up the road to face Austin Peay. The Eagles needed overtime to beat the Govs in Morehead to start 2010.
