MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State soccer team battled in-state rival Kentucky to a scoreless draw in double overtime Wednesday night at Jayne Stadium. The Wildcats’ record moved to 2-1-1, while MSU now sits at 2-4-1 in 2009.
MSU head coach Warren Lipka faced the program he started and coached for 17 years.
“I think it was what I thought it was going to be – an individual battle. Each team had their own battles,” he said. “We’re going to build from this as a team. There were a lot of close calls. I think it could have easily been a 2-2 score. I know that we’re continuing to go forward in what we want to do for the rest of the season.”
In the first half, shots were few and far between. Kentucky held a slight edge (3-2) in shots, and the Eagles had a one corner kick advantage (2-1) as both teams played possession soccer.
The Eagles had a nice chance at the net in the 56th minute of the second half. Bethany Davidson served a corner kick into the box where Brittany MacLennan was able to get a header off that just missed wide.
UK pulled ahead in shots in the second half, outshooting the host Eagles 7-3. Kiondra McGee had a solid shot at the net in the 60th minute, but the attempt sailed wide left. UK had back-to-back-to-back corner kick attempts with 13 minutes left, but the Eagles denied each time.
With 10 minutes left, MSU’s Erin Adams broke free and smashed a 15-yard shot from the upper right side of the box at UK keeper Sydney Hiance. Hiance made the stop though.
The Eagles got back-to-back chances at corner kicks in the last four minutes of regulation but could not generate a shot.
In the first overtime, UK was able to generate two shots, and MSU got off one shot in the second overtime. The Eagles also registered two corners in the final 10 minute period.
The Wildcats held a 12-6 advantage in shots on the final box score. Giuleana Lopez and Alyssa Telang had four shots each for UK. Erin Adams had three shots for the Eagles. MSU finished with nine corners to the Wildcats’ eight.
