Athens, Ohio – Despite an early goal from Jillian Birchmeier, the Morehead State soccer team was defeated by the Ohio Bobcats 2-1 Friday afternoon in Athens.
Birchmeier found the back of the net for her team leading fifth goal of the season just five minutes into the match. Birchmeier launched a shot from 22 yards out that beat Bobcat goalkeeper Jess MacLean into the top right corner of the net.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime. Eagle goaltender Lily Meisner made four saves in the period to help sustain the MSU lead. Morehead fired nine total shots in the stanza, while the Bobcats fired eight shots.
Ohio’s Amy Lower evened the match early in the second half, when she capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity.
The match remained squared until the 83rd minute when Erin Schwenke found the back of the net for the game winner. Schwenke took a touch pass from Jasmine Merith and struck a shot that beat Meisner.
Ohio outshot MSU 8-4 in the second half and Meisner recorded two additional saves.
Meisner totaled six saves in the match while her counterpart, Ohio’s MacLean stopped five shots.
The loss drops MSU to 3-5-1, while Ohio improves to 2-4 on the season.
