MSU's "Nathans" Tennis Pair Wins Doubles Flight at Lousiville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Morehead State freshman Nathan Martin and sophomore Nathan Blum highlighted the Eagles' weekend at the Louisville Invitational. The duo won the flight C doubles competition.

The MSU Nathan's defeated Andrew Whitmer/Bobby Swanson of Western Kentucky in the opening round, 8-6. They then knocked off Micah LeMoine/Xavier Riart-Ferrer of Illinois State in the championship, 8-6.

In singles flights, Martin also won a opening round match. He defeated WKU's Arul Selvan, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the second round before falling. Blum lost in the opening round of the flight B singles, but returned to claim a victory in the first round of the consolation: 6-0, 6-1 over Whitmer.

Chris Shafik also claimed an opening round win in flight C singles, defeating Michael Hobson of Illinois State, 6-1, 6-2.

Also participating for the Eagles were Greg Anderson and Bradley Bryan.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
