MSU Finishes Third At OVC Championships

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Morehead State rifle team finished fifth out of six in the air rifle competition at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships at Tennessee Tech Sunday. Nicole Heitmeyer earned a spot on the OVC Smallbore All-Newcomer team after a solid performance in the championships.


Jacksonville State captured the title after sweeping both the air rifle and smallbore competitions.

 

MSU posted a team total of 2,256 in the air rifle finals. The Eagles were led by Sara Bullock with an aggregate score of 568. Elizabeth Lyon was second on the team with a score of 566, and Shawn Holley was third for the Eagles with a score of 565.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
