MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Senior Darlene Bognot shot a two-under-par 70 to help the Morehead State women’s golf team begin the 2009-10 season with an 18-hole tri-match victory against Eastern Kentucky and Marshall Saturday at the par 72, 6,179-yard Eagle Trace Golf Course.

Bognot started the season with an omen by birdying the first hole – a 366-yard par four. She also birdied holes three, sixteen and eighteen in shooting a career low round.

“It was a great day and a wonderful way to start the year out,” said MSU head coach Stephanie Barker,“ I am really proud of the team. They have been working hard and obviously it has paid off. This win is something we can build on this season. It was really nice seeing Darlene shoot under par and win her first tournament. We now know what we need work on from here on out.”

The Eagles also got a 77 scorecard from freshman Marisa Kamelgarn in her first collegiate match. The New York native tied with Marshall’s Maria Battaglia for the day’s second-lowest round.

Junior Lynn Grunkemeyer carded an 80 to tie for seventh place, while junior Paige Lausier and newcomer Emma Eksell, a transfer from the University of Kentucky, both fired an 82. Three Eagle players played as individuals. Sophomore Emma Jonsson shot a 79, while senior Ashley Redmond turned in an 81. Sophomore Karolina Tunstig had an 84.

As a team the Eagles totaled a 309 round. Marshall finished with a 316, while EKU came in with a 324 team tally.

The Eagles’ next action is scheduled for Sept. 21-22 at the Louisville Fall Classic at the Cardinal Club.
